Leif Sande, chairman of The Arthur Svensson International Prize for Trade Union Rights congratulates the Tunisian trade union confederation, the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), with the Nobel Peace Prize 2015, which UGTT was awarded together with three other organizations; the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH), and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers.

– The award is an acknowledgement of the fact that the trade union movement plays a crucial role in the society, not only when it comes to wage negotiations and collective agreements, but also in creating and shaping democracy and welfare for the society as a whole. The award shows the importance of trade union rights as they are enshrined in the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, says ChairmanSande.

The Arthur Svensson Prize Committee, which anually awards a prize to a person or organisation that has worked predominately to promote these trade union rights and/or strenghten trade union organizing around the world, is therefore especially happy with this year’s Nobel Peace Prize award.
